It was such a gift to have Professor Sally Cripps share her insights, perspective and wisdom with Melbourne Forum members and guests on the Candid Conversation theme of 𝘼𝙄: 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙧𝙖𝙘𝙩𝙞𝙘𝙚, 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙧𝙤𝙢𝙞𝙨𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙋𝙞𝙩𝙛𝙖𝙡𝙡𝙨 – 𝘽𝙖𝙡𝙖𝙣𝙘𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙘𝙖𝙥𝙖𝙗𝙞𝙡𝙞𝙩𝙮 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙝𝙪𝙢𝙖𝙣 𝙟𝙪𝙙𝙜𝙚𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩.

Sally is a co-director of the UTS Human Technology Institute. She is globally recognised for pioneering work combining large scale mathematical models, Bayesian machine learning and AI to address complex societal and education issues. The work of Sally and her team helps figure out the most appropriate interventions to bring about sustainable change.

Sally brought great clarity to the AI area such that the participants left with much greater grasp of the differences and directions between Predictive, Causal and Adaptive AI. The real treat was Sally’s ability to explain and share how AI can really be used for good, giving real-life examples from the health and education sectors where it has been possible to pinpoint what sort of action or intervention might work for specific situations and people. It was very heartening for many of us to understand where and how AI is being used very positively and meaningfully – really balancing capability and human judgement.
