Martin Grant: From Melbourne to Paris, and Back
21st August 2025
By Weston Lewis
As part of our new Melbourne Series, Melbourne Forum members and guests were treated to a private tour of the Martin Grant exhibition at NGV Australia. It was a fabulous experience, brought to life by our knowledgeable volunteer guides, Julie and Robyn.
As well as taking in the stunning works, we gained unique insights into a homegrown fashion icon. Martin was the right person in the right place at the right time in the 1980s, when Melbourne was undergoing a cultural transformation with the punk scene and new forms of self-expression. His vision to celebrate the feminine form through fabric, shape, and elegance propelled him to the international stage in Paris.
Today, Martin's passion for sustainability shines through in his rejection of fast fashion, favouring instead timeless pieces crafted with precision and purpose.
Thank you to all who joined us. And special thanks to member Pearl Tang whose suggestion brought this inspiring experience to our program. We encourage all members to share their program ideas - it’s how we uncover the unique and memorable opportunities Melbourne has to offer.
