Drinks with Marlo Baragwanath
13th August 2025
By Dr Marianne Broadbent, Melbourne Forum Chair
Victorian Ombudsman Marlo Baragwanath led an insightful and challenging session with Melbourne Forum members and guests last week. The focus was on the extent to which we are taking the Victorian Charter of Human Rights seriously. How well are we dealing with difficult issues, particularly those within the justice system? Are we at risk of failing the vulnerable through policies that are electorally popular but not fair or effective? The conversation left participants more attuned to what genuine fairness entails, and to the complexities of driving meaningful change within our systems. The discussion carried on over refreshments, as we considered our shared responsibility to speak out whenever that sense of fairness is absent.
