Equal Identities Report: How to balance the rights of gender diverse people amid political backlash

Less than 1% of the Australian population are trans or gender diverse, yet media coverage and political debate about trans issues continues to rise. 
Equal Identities, a new report by the Australian Human Rights Commission, has found discrimination against trans and gender diverse people is widespread - with serious impacts on safety, access to essential services and full participation in society.

This report has come amid heightened public discussion around gender, and a trend of anti-gender equality sentiment in Australia and abroad.

During this event, Sex Discrimination Commissioner Dr Anna Cody will share findings from Equal Identities about the experiences of trans and gender diverse people in Australia, the rise of anti-LGBTIQA+ rhetoric and what it means for gender equality, and finding the balance we need to make safety, dignity and equal treatment a lived reality for everyone. 

Equal Identities, a new report by the Australian Human Rights Commission

Dr Anna Cody started as Australia’s Sex Discrimination Commissioner in September 2023. Before this, Dr Cody had a distinguished career as an academic, as a lawyer specialising in discrimination and as a passionate advocate for human rights.  Her work over the years has included substantial advocacy to various United Nations human rights committees when they have reviewed Australia’s and other nations’ fulfilment of their human rights obligations.

Prior to her appointment to the Commission she was Professor and Dean of the School of Law and at the University of Western Sydney, leading education and research in the School to better reflect the diversity of the community and the intersection of law and justice.
