Dangerous Dinner - Can Multiculturalism and Social Cohesion Coexist?
Dangerous Dinner - Can Multiculturalism and Social Cohesion Coexist?
Hosted by Prof Barbara van Ernst AM, Dr Ingmar Wahlqvist & Deborah Remfry
In an age of mass migration, globalized culture, and rising political polarization, many societies are asking the same uncomfortable question: can a nation remain deeply diverse and still remain deeply united?
What actually holds diverse societies together — shared values, shared laws, economic stability, or simple empathy? Is national identity still essential social glue, or is it an outdated idea in a globalized world?
Supporters of multiculturalism argue that diversity makes societies more dynamic, innovative, and resilient. Critics argue that too much diversity can weaken trust, solidarity, and common purpose — especially during periods of economic hardship or political stress.
So what do we really mean by multiculturalism? What counts as social cohesion? And are multiculturalism and national unity naturally in tension, or can they ultimately reinforce one another?
Tonight’s discussion is not about arriving at easy answers. It is about examining the assumptions, fears, hopes, and trade-offs beneath one of the defining questions of modern society.
Dangerous Dinners offer an opportunity to fearlessly discuss contemporary, challenging and interesting ideas, themes and points of view.
In a relaxed, informal dining environment, we draw on the diverse expertise of our members, sharing their ideas and experiences on complex or controversial topics; to learn from others, challenge assumptions, spark new ideas or point the way for potential actions.
Dangerous because the topics may be difficult to discuss, ask the silent questions, challenge thinking, unpack pressing issues, test emerging trends. Safe because we respect others’ views, it is polite not offensive, under Chatham House rule and listening with the intent to learn.
On a regular basis, you will be able to join your fellow Melbourne Forum members for a robust discussion on a range of themes in dynamic company and over a light meal. The focus is on ‘food for thought’ with shared conversations and shared platters as part of the collegiality.
