Drinks with Emeritus Professor Paul Strangio

Hosted by Professor Vin Massaro

Australia’s next federal election is imminent, with key political battles already taking shape. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese’s Labor government will seek re-election amid cost-of-living concerns, social cohesion worries, and debates over energy and national security. The Liberal-National Coalition, under Peter Dutton, aims to regain power by focusing on economic management and government accountability. However, many suggest that neither major party will succeed in forming government, with support from independent members and minor parties potentially needed to achieve a majority of seats in the House.

So what can we expect over the course of the campaign and at the ballot box? To help us anticipate what lies ahead, we are delighted to be joined by Prof Paul Strangio. Paul is an emeritus professor of politics in the School of Social Sciences at Monash University. A political historian who specialises in the areas of political leadership and political parties, he is the author and editor of a dozen books on Australian politics, amongst which are award-winning titles on the prime ministership and the Victorian Labor Party. Paul's current projects include a study of Australian national politics in the 21st century which is to be published by Melbourne University Publishing in late 2025. Paul is also a long-time commentator on Australian and Victorian politics in the print and electronic media.
