Surviving & Prospering in the (Cyber) World: An Update on Geopolitics & the Cyber Threat Environment
Drinks with Dr Derek Bopping
Hosted by Tony Nippard
We’re often told that the cyber threat environment is becoming more complex and dangerous. Data breaches affecting large organisations regularly feature in the cyber risk landscape, and cybercrimes affecting consumers continue to occur at an alarming rate. But today’s cyber threats are also being shaped by the geopolitical risk environment.
We are honoured to have Dr Derek Bopping, First Assistant Director General of the Australian Signals Directorate, join us in conversation to discuss how geopolitics is driving these threats, and what can be done to help protect our critical infrastructure.
Derek is the Head of the Australian Signals Directorate’s (ASD) Melbourne Office. Previously, he led ASD’s Cyber Engagement and Strategy Division, where he oversaw ASD’s cybersecurity partnerships with industry, the media, and other government stakeholders. Derek was formerly the Deputy Counter-Terrorism Coordinator, overseeing the design and implementation of Australia’s federal counter-terrorism laws, and has worked as an independent consultant focusing on the insurance and business interruption aspects of cyber risk. Between 2015 and 2019, Derek led the Department of Home Affairs’ engagement with the US government on terrorism, immigration and border management policy from Washington, D.C. Derek holds a PhD in social psychology from the Australian National University.
