Sustaining one of Australia's Great Newspapers
Drinks with Patrick Elligett
Hosted by Prof Ian Dunn AM
In 2024 The Age celebrated its 170th Anniversary. Upon its launch on 17 October 1854 it was deigned to be "a publication dedicated to the record of great movements, advocacy of free institutions, diffusion of truth, advancement of man." As further explained in an article written by current Editor, Patrick Elligett, on 17 October 2024, "Although it is a profoundly different publication now to the one first printed in 1854, that original promise remains part of the fabric of The Age."
What perfect timing then for a discussion on the past and future of this Victorian institution.
We are privileged to be joined in conversation by Patrick Elligett. Patrick was appointed editor of The Age in January 2023, after Gay Alcorn stood down due to her husband’s ill health. He had previously served as News Editor and Foreign Editor for The Age and Sydney Morning Herald. In his interesting career he previously edited New Daily for five years and, at one point, Sunraysia Daily.
The Age occupies an important part in Victoria’s civil society and successive editors have spoken to Melbourne Forum on the challenges facing daily newspapers. Join Patrick and your fellow members to gain insight on the newspaper's current state of play.
