Nuclear fusion or nuclear fission?

Do you know the difference?

Is nuclear fusion the holy grail of clean energy?

This is what Melbourne Forum does best: insightful discussions on the important issues of today and tomorrow. Join us at this exclusive event to discover all of this and more.

Fusion works on the principle that energy can be released by forcing together atomic nuclei rather than by splitting them, as in the case of the fission reactions that drive existing nuclear power stations.

Nuclear fusion is a clean, futuristic power source that some see as a game-changer for the climate crisis. One of its benefits is that it does not produce long-lived radioactive waste, unlike nuclear fission. Yet, it’s a technology that will need many years to commercialise, it is complex and as an energy source requires a broad knowledge of several disciplines.

Helping us explore the potential and challenges is Dr. Edward Morse, Professor of Nuclear Engineering at the University of California, Berkeley who will join us via Zoom.

For over thirty-five years he has taught on fusion, plasma physics, and fusion technology. He has authored over 140 publications in the areas of plasma physics, mathematics, fusion technology, lasers, microwave sources, neutron imaging, plasma diagnostics, and homeland security applications. For several years he operated the largest fusion neutron source in the US. Frequently consulted by the media to explain the underlying science and technology of nuclear energy policy and events, Dr. Morse is also a consultant and expert witness in applications of fusion neutrons to oil exploration.

This truly is a special opportunity. You’ll get to understand this cutting-edge technology and hear from a leading expert on how nuclear fusion could provide a much-needed breakthrough.
