Dr Paul Valent is a psychiatrist, psychotherapist and author. He is a highly regarded expert on trauma and its psychological effects and it has written extensively on this subject. Dr Valent is a co-founder and former president of the Australasian Society for Traumatic Stress Studies. He is a former Director of Psychological Services to the emergency departments of Prince Henry's Hospital and Monash Medical Centre and a former honorary senior lecturer at Monash University. He has particular interest in genocide and its impact, including its intergenerational impact.
Dr Valent’s published works are too numerous to mention. His most recent book is “In Two Minds; tales of a psychotherapist”.
Dr Valent recently accompanied Melbourne Forum member Michael Strong and others to Cambodia to observe the work of Hagar International in supporting women and children who have survived slavery, human trafficking and extreme violence. The incidence and impact of post-traumatic stress are poorly understood by many in the
community. Dr Valent will lead a discussion on this important topic.
