Three years ago, Nicola Thomson and Toby Kent joined us for lunch as they embarked on implementing in Melbourne the opportunity presented by the newly formed non-governmental organisation, 100 Resilient Cities (100RC) – Pioneered by the Rockefeller Foundation.
Melbourne was selected from hundreds of cities globally to participate in 100RC - an initiative to develop and test innovative approaches that build cities’ ability to better withstand the chronic stresses and acute shocks that challenge communities, business and governments.
Initial thoughts of natural disasters, declining social cohesion and risks to essential services come to mind when considering a resilient city, but where are we now with environmental and climate adaptation, a zero-emissions economy, a rapidly growing and transforming population, increasing social inequality, lack of access to the housing market and increased social isolation?
Before becoming Melbourne’s Chief Resilience Officer, Toby had created and implemented resilience and sustainability strategies across a range of sectors, locally and internationally.
Today, three years on, are we any better prepared today to manage the challenges of tomorrow?
