Don’t miss a moment to savour with Elizabeth Chong
Elizabeth Chong arrived in Australia from Guangzhou as a 3 year old in 1934. She is a celebrity Chef, prize- winning author, lifetime Australia Day Ambassador, and passionate promoter of multiculturalism and Chinese and Asian food. To Chinese restaurateurs she is affectionately and respectfully known as the Empress of Chinatown.
Elizabeth will share stories about her cultural heritage, a grandfather who came to the goldfields in the 1850’s and a father who was pioneer in the introduction of Chinese food and produce to the wholesale markets, a well- known restaurateur, and who in the 1940’s introduced the snack foods Dim Sims and Chicken Rolls.
Elizabeth is an author of many cook books, foremost teacher of Chinese cooking, and is one of the most enduring personalities of the Australian food industry, who has certainly honoured her forebears by adding her own chapter of historic relevance to the Chen Wing Young family story.
She still runs her own business, and regularly leads culinary tours into Asia, presides over an Asian food gourmet club in Melbourne, and will share with us her reflections as a business woman, and why, she is not yet ready to hang up her Wok.
