Future Focus 2030 - Insights from the 2018 Victorian State of the Environment Report

Members Lunch with Dr Gillian Sparkes

14th November 2018

Members' Lunch with Dr Gillian Sparkes, Commissioner for Environmental Sustainability

Do we know what we need to know, when we need to know it, to protect Victoria’s environment and our liveability in the face of population growth and a changing climate? We can learn a lot from the emergency management sector on how to improve our business as usual approach to environment protection.

Appointed into the role by both sides of government, Gillian is a company director with roles including Chair Western Port Integrated Water Management Forum and board member of the CFA, ICN Victoria and the Victorian (DEDJTR) Investment Committee. Gillian has had a unique career working in industry and government - State and Federal - and with community. She has extensive experience leading transformation and policy reform in complex stakeholder environments.

As Commissioner Gillian reports and advises government on the environment and is advocating for increased investment in environmental monitoring, community participation in environmental science and better application by government of environmental economic accounting, data analytics, citizen science and the UN SDGs to protect the environment and deal with climate change. Her ‘State & Benefit’ Framework, tabled in the Victorian parliament in 2015, outlines her approach to the 2018 Victorian State of the Environment Report and the reforms she is leading across government which to date, have resulted in the Commissioner being assigned six new functions for the first time since the role was established in 2003.

Join this conversation hosted by Peter Lamell where Gillian will provide a peek into her work preparing the 2018 Victorian State of the Environment Report, due to be tabled early in 2019 and discuss critical areas for focus and investment by Government over the next decade.
