Dr Helen Szoke AO leads Oxfam Australia, one of the biggest and most influential overseas aid agencies in Australia. She is the leading advocate for overseas aid, and a leading spokesperson on human rights and foreign policy.
The current climate for overseas aid in Australia is toxic, with more and more cuts to Australian government aid, alongside increasing Chinese soft power aid, specifically in the Pacific.
Public support for aid is waning, with scandals in Haiti and widespread scepticism as to its impact. Yet the need for more and better aid is clear, for humanitarian purposes as well as to maintain Australia’s interests and reputation.
Australia has dropped the ball.
Come and hear Helen explain why, and what we should do about it.
