The space industry sector has been growing at a compound annual growth rate of 9.52 per cent from 1998 to 2015, more than three times the annual growth rate of world GDP in the same period. Globally, revenue from space-related activities in 2015 was about US$323 billion.
Currently, Australia is one of the few developed nations without a national space agency.
In July 2017, the Australian Government appointed Dr Megan Clark AC Chair of an Expert Review Group of Australia’s space industry capability. A $50 million injection from the federal budget to establish a dedicated Australian space agency expected to be announced, with Megan leading the agency for its first 12 months.
Megan began her career as a mine and exploration geologist, was the first female CEO of the CSIRO, a member of the Prime Minister’s Science, Engineering and Innovation Council, as well as the Prime Minister’s Taskforce on Manufacturing. She is also a Commissioner on the Commission on Sustainable Agriculture and Climate Change.
Megan was made a Companion of the Order of Australia, AC for eminent service to scientific research and development through fostering innovation to science administration through strategic leadership roles and to the development of public policy for technological sciences. She is a Director of Rio Rinto, on the Advisory Board of the Bank of Merrill Lynch in Australia, Japan’s Science and Technology Forum Council, Trustee of the Science and Industry Endowment Fund and a member of the Advisory Board of the World Economic Forum’s Risk report.
