“The council made one, single recommendation for constitutional change: that the constitution should provide for a representative body that gives Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples a voice to the federal parliament, and the right to be consulted on the policies that affect them. Despite the government’s rejection of this proposal, I remain optimistic that one day we will have the political leadership to match the leadership demonstrated by the Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders who achieved consensus on the Uluru Statement from the Heart”. - Mark Leibler AC
Mark is senior partner at Arnold Bloch Leibler. As head of the firm’s renowned taxation practice, for five decades he has acted for many of Australia’s largest businesses and corporate leaders.
Mark was co-chair of the Referendum Council on Constitutional Recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, which delivered its final report to the Prime Minister and Leader of the Opposition on 30 June 2017.
