Signature Dinner with Bill Kelty AC

The story of Australia - why we are different

16th August 2017

Described by Paul Keating as ‘Australia’s most exceptional trade unionist’, Bill Kelty has made an extraordinary contribution to the country and to the wages and conditions of workers. He was the Secretary of the Australian Council of the Australian Council of Trade Unions (ACTU) from 1983 to 2000, where he oversaw workforce economic transformation and the implementation of lasting reforms.

Bill was the architect and driving force behind the achievement of compulsory superannuation entitlements. He was also responsible for helping to negotiate national fiscal policy and significant improvements in the competitiveness of the Australian economy, including the restructuring of Australian industry.

He was a Director of the Reserve Bank for 10 years, an AFL commissioner for 18 years, recently completed a number of years on Latrobe University Council and still is a director on the Linfox Board, Luna Park Melbourne, Virtual Communities and Evans and Partners.

Drawing on his astute understanding of economic policies, history and political landscapes, Bill will reflect on the role of unions in social democracy, and the importance of balance in relation to political parties, both historically and today. He will share his perspective on the current issues facing Australian workers and the Australian economy.
