Clayton Thomas is an accomplished and popular speaker in this highly specialized area of medicine. His talk will focus on what pain is, when it is helpful and when it is harmful. What is the role of the brain and psychological factors in pain processing? Is medication always beneficial or warranted?
Clayton has a special interest in rehabilitation and pain medicine and was awarded a Churchill Fellowship to develop a predictive model for back injury, and to promote high quality and long term rehabilitation. He has a Masters in Public Health from Monash University, and completed a thesis on ‘The Measurement of Outcome after Major Orthopaedic Trauma’.
Clayton established a pain service at Dorset Rehabilitation Centre in 1996 and the following year he was appointed Director of Medical Services of the Victorian Rehabilitation Centre, where he established a Pain Unit to cater for the large group of chronic pain patients following motor-vehicle trauma. In 2001 he was granted a Fellowship of the Faculty of Pain Medicine (FFPMANZCA) Australian & New Zealand College of Anaesthetists, in recognition of his expertise and contribution in the area of pain medicine.
